Treading Water
We spent a long day treading water ten minutes at a time;
learnt how to breathe through one another,
live through one another underneath the salt,
keep warm hugging nothing but our knees,
keep smiling showing nothing but our crashing teeth.
Between exhaling life in through my mouth
and coming up from the depths to look at my eyes,
you said, 'Now, if we face a shipwreck, we know we'll survive.'
